Salary to Hourly Calculator

To convert a salary to an hourly wage, divide it by the hours you are paid for in a year: $60,000 ÷ 2,080 hours = $28.85 an hour. Add your paid days off to see what each hour you actually work is worth.

Step by step

How to convert salary to hourly

  1. Start with gross annual salaryUse the salary before tax, as written in your offer or contract.
  2. Work out paid hoursHours per week × paid weeks. Standard full time: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.
  3. DivideSalary ÷ paid hours. $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.

The quick mental shortcut: divide the salary by 2,000 — halve it and drop the thousands. $60,000 becomes about $30. It is a little high (by about 4%), but it is close enough to compare offers on the spot.

Examples

Worked examples

Real-world scenarios, worked through step by step.

$45,000 salary, 37.5-hour week

$45,000 ÷ 1,950 hours = $23.08 an hour. On a 40-hour week the same salary is $21.63 — a shorter week makes each hour worth more.

Salary with generous leave

$70,000 with 25 days of vacation and 11 holidays: paid hours 2,080, worked hours 2,080 − 288 = 1,792. Paid rate $33.65; rate per hour actually worked $39.06.

Exempt employee working long weeks

$65,000 for an average of 48 hours a week: $65,000 ÷ (48 × 52) = $26.04 per hour worked, versus $31.25 on paper.

Offer in a different pay period

A $2,600 bi-weekly salary is $67,600 a year, or $32.50 an hour at 40 hours a week.

Job offers

Salaried vs hourly: what else to compare

  • Overtime. Hourly (non-exempt) workers in the US must get at least 1.5× pay for hours over 40 in a week. Many salaried workers are exempt and get no overtime pay. See the overtime calculator.
  • Benefits. Health insurance, retirement matching and paid leave can be worth thousands a year and are more common in salaried roles.
  • Predictability. A salary pays the same each period; hourly pay moves with hours.
  • Exempt status. Being paid a salary does not automatically make an employee exempt; the job duties and a minimum salary level decide it under US law.
Pay frequency

Salary in every pay period

Employers pay salaries on different schedules. On a $60,000 salary:

  • Weekly (52 paychecks): $1,153.85
  • Bi-weekly (26 paychecks): $2,307.69
  • Semi-monthly (24 paychecks): $2,500.00
  • Monthly (12 paychecks): $5,000.00

These are gross amounts. Taxes, insurance and retirement contributions come out before you are paid — estimate the net amount with the paycheck calculator.

Avoid errors

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by 52 × 5 × 8 when you work a 37.5-hour week — use your real hours.
  • Comparing a salary with an hourly wage without counting overtime eligibility.
  • Forgetting that a monthly salary × 12 is the annual figure — not × 4 weeks.
  • Using net (take-home) pay for one job and gross pay for another.
Hours matter

How weekly hours change the hourly value of a salary

The same salary is worth very different hourly amounts depending on how many hours it really buys. Here is a $60,000 salary across common schedules, with the time-and-a-half rate a non-exempt employee on that base would earn for overtime.

Hours per weekHours per yearHourly value1.5× overtime rate
30 h1,560$38.46$57.69
35 h1,820$32.97$49.45
37.5 h1,950$30.77$46.15
40 h2,080$28.85$43.27
45 h2,340$25.64$38.46
50 h2,600$23.08$34.62
55 h2,860$20.98$31.47

Two lessons stand out. First, a 35-hour contract pays about 14% more per hour than a 40-hour contract on the same salary. Second, an exempt employee who drifts from 40 to 50 hours a week has effectively taken a 20% hourly pay cut. If your hours have crept up, log them for a few weeks — the weekly hours calculator or a time tracker makes the pattern obvious — and use the numbers in your next pay conversation.

Employers face the mirror image: a team that routinely works unrecorded extra hours looks cheaper per hour than it is, and the true cost shows up later as burnout and turnover.

Use cases

Who uses the Salary to Hourly calculator — and why

  • Employees checking whether a raise or a new offer is really better.
  • Salaried staff who work long weeks and want to know their true hourly earnings.
  • Employers converting salaried roles to hourly (for example when a role becomes non-exempt).
  • Freelancers setting a rate based on a salary they would otherwise earn.
  • HR calculating pay for partial periods, unpaid leave or final paychecks.
  • Students and career changers comparing industries quoted in different pay terms.
Methodology & sources

How we calculate

  • Hourly rate = salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year).
  • Rate per hour worked = salary ÷ (paid hours − paid days off × hours per day).
  • Bi-weekly uses 26 pay periods and semi-monthly uses 24.
  • Overtime eligibility (exempt vs non-exempt) follows the US Fair Labor Standards Act, 29 U.S.C. § 207, and the Department of Labor’s regular-rate rules (29 CFR Part 778).
  • All calculations run in your browser; nothing you type is sent to StaffTiming or stored.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How much is $50,000 a year per hour?

$50,000 a year is $24.04 an hour on a 40-hour, 52-week schedule.

How much is $75,000 a year per hour?

$75,000 a year is $36.06 an hour at 40 hours a week.

How much is $100,000 a year per hour?

$100,000 a year is $48.08 an hour at 40 hours a week.

How do you convert salary to hourly quickly?

Divide the salary by 2,000. That is the same as halving it and removing the thousands: $70,000 is about $35 an hour. For the exact figure divide by 2,080.

Should I count paid holidays and vacation?

For your paid hourly rate, no — they are paid hours. To see what each hour you actually work is worth, subtract them, as the calculator does when you enter paid days off.

How many hours a year is a 37.5-hour week?

37.5 × 52 = 1,950 hours.

Is a salary before or after tax?

Salaries are quoted before tax (gross). The conversion gives a gross hourly wage.

Do salaried employees get overtime?

Some do. In the US, salaried employees who do not meet the exemption tests for duties and minimum salary are non-exempt and must be paid overtime.

How much is $60,000 a year per hour?

$28.85 an hour at 40 hours a week, or $30.77 at 37.5 hours.

How much is $40,000 a year per hour?

$19.23 an hour at 40 hours a week.

Why is my real hourly rate lower than the calculation?

If you regularly work more than your contracted hours without overtime pay, your pay is spread over more hours.

Does the number of working days in a year matter?

Slightly. Some years have 261 or 262 weekdays instead of 260; salaried pay normally stays the same.

How much is $90,000 a year per hour?

$43.27 an hour on a 40-hour week, or $46.15 on a 37.5-hour week.

How much is $120,000 a year per hour?

$57.69 an hour at 40 hours a week.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate with overtime?

Find the regular hourly rate first (salary ÷ 2,080 for a 40-hour week). If the employee is non-exempt, overtime hours are paid at 1.5 × that rate on top of the salary.

Does a salary include holidays?

Yes. A salary is paid evenly across the year, including paid holidays and vacation. That is why salary ÷ 2,080 is the paid hourly rate, while salary ÷ hours actually worked is higher.

How do I compare a salary with contract work?

Add the value of benefits and employer-paid taxes to the salary, then compare it with the contract rate × the hours you would realistically bill.
