Time Zone Converter
Choose a date, a time and two locations. The converter applies each place’s daylight saving rules for that date and shows the local time, the hour difference, both UTC offsets and Zulu (UTC) time.
- Local time = UTC + the zone’s offset on that date.
- New York is UTC−5 in winter, UTC−4 in summer.
- US clocks change on the 2nd Sunday of March and 1st Sunday of November.
- Europe changes on the last Sundays of March and October.
How time zone conversion works
- Convert the starting time to UTCSubtract the starting zone’s offset. 9:00 AM in New York in winter (UTC−5) is 14:00 UTC.
- Apply the destination offsetAdd the destination’s offset. London in winter is UTC+0, so 14:00 UTC is 2:00 PM.
- Check daylight saving for the dateOffsets change during daylight saving time, and countries change on different dates.
Going through UTC avoids mistakes when both places observe daylight saving on different schedules.

Worked examples
Real-world scenarios, worked through step by step.
Booking an international call
A client in Chicago proposes 10 AM on 20 October. Karachi is UTC+5 and Chicago is on daylight time (UTC−5): 10 AM + 10 hours = 8 PM in Karachi.
Shift handover
A support team in Manila (UTC+8) hands over at 6 PM local time — that is 10 AM in London in winter (UTC+0) and 11 AM in summer.
Deadline in another zone
“End of day Friday, Pacific” is 5 PM Pacific — already Saturday morning in Singapore.
The DST gap week
In mid-March a weekly 9 AM New York call is at 1 PM in London, not 2 PM, until Europe changes its clocks.
Daylight saving time: the tricky weeks
The US moves clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November. The EU and UK change on the last Sunday in March and the last Sunday in October. So for two or three weeks in March and one week around the start of November, the New York–London gap is 4 hours instead of the usual 5. Recurring meetings drift by an hour during those weeks — a classic source of missed calls.
Southern-hemisphere countries change in the opposite season: Sydney is on daylight time from early October to early April. Countries without DST, such as Pakistan or India, change their gap with the US and Europe twice a year without changing their own clocks.
Working across time zones
For distributed teams the hard part is not the arithmetic but the overlap. Map each person’s working hours in UTC, find the shared window, and keep live meetings inside it. Our playbook for managing teams across time zones covers async habits and fair meeting rotation, and StaffTiming for distributed teams records each person’s hours in their own local time.
For payroll, always record hours in the employee’s local time — overtime rules follow the place where the work is done.
UTC, GMT and Zulu time
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the world’s time standard. GMT is the time zone of the UK in winter and is often used loosely to mean UTC. Zulu time (Z) is the military and aviation name for UTC. The military time converter shows live Zulu time and the military time zone letters.
Working-hours overlap between major cities
Shared hours when both locations work 9 AM–5 PM local time, in January (US and Europe on standard time, Sydney on daylight time):
| City | Overlap with New York | Overlap with London | Overlap with Karachi |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | 3 h | 8 h | 3 h |
| Paris | 2 h | 7 h | 4 h |
| Karachi | 0 h | 3 h | 8 h |
| India | 0 h | 2.5 h | 7.5 h |
| Singapore | 0 h | 0 h | 5 h |
| Tokyo | 0 h | 0 h | 4 h |
| Sydney | 0 h | 0 h | 2 h |
Zero overlap means somebody has to work outside 9-to-5 for a live meeting — rotate who that is, or move the work to asynchronous handovers.
US time zones at a glance
The mainland US has four main time zones, each one hour apart: Eastern (UTC−5, UTC−4 in summer), Central (UTC−6/−5), Mountain (UTC−7/−6) and Pacific (UTC−8/−7). Alaska is UTC−9/−8 and Hawaii is UTC−10 with no daylight saving. Most of Arizona stays on Mountain Standard Time all year, so in summer it matches Pacific time.
For payroll in multi-state teams, record each employee’s hours in their local time zone. Overtime, breaks and pay-frequency rules follow the state where the work is done, and the time card calculator should always use local clock times.
Do it in Excel or Google Sheets
Spreadsheets do not know about time zones, so apply the offset yourself. With a time in A2:
- Add an offset of 5 hours
=A2+TIME(5,0,0) - Subtract an offset of 4 hours (wrapping past midnight)
=MOD(A2-TIME(4,0,0),1) - Half-hour offset (+5:30)
=MOD(A2+TIME(5,30,0),1)
Because the offset depends on daylight saving, check it for the date first — the converter above does that automatically.
Who uses the Time Zone converter — and why
- Distributed teams scheduling meetings.

- Payroll teams converting hours worked across zones.
How we calculate
- Conversion uses the IANA time zone database built into your browser (Intl API), including historical and future daylight saving rules.
- US daylight saving dates follow the Energy Policy Act of 2005; EU dates follow Directive 2000/84/EC.
- All calculations run in your browser; nothing you type is sent to StaffTiming or stored.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert time between time zones?
Convert the time to UTC using the first zone’s offset, then apply the second zone’s offset. Check daylight saving for that date.
What is the time difference between New York and London?
5 hours for most of the year, 4 hours for a few weeks in March and around the start of November.
When do US clocks change?
Second Sunday in March (forward) and first Sunday in November (back).
When do UK and EU clocks change?
Last Sunday in March and last Sunday in October.
Does Pakistan use daylight saving time?
Not currently. Pakistan Standard Time is UTC+5 all year.
Does India use daylight saving time?
No. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year.
Does Arizona observe daylight saving time?
Most of Arizona does not, so it matches Pacific time in summer and Mountain time in winter.
What is Zulu time?
UTC, used by the military and aviation.
Is GMT the same as UTC?
For everyday purposes yes, though UTC is the scientific standard and GMT is a time zone.
How do I find a meeting time for several zones?
List each person’s working hours in UTC and look for the overlap.
Why is my recurring meeting an hour off?
Probably because one location has changed to or from daylight saving and the other has not yet.
Does the converter use my browser?
Yes. It uses your browser’s built-in time zone database, which includes daylight saving rules.
What time zone is UTC+5?
Pakistan Standard Time (PKT) and several other countries use UTC+5.
What is the time difference between Pakistan and New York?
9 hours when New York is on daylight time (summer) and 10 hours in winter. Pakistan does not change its clocks.
What is the time difference between India and the UK?
4 hours 30 minutes when the UK is on summer time and 5 hours 30 minutes in winter.
What is EST in UTC?
Eastern Standard Time is UTC−5. Eastern Daylight Time is UTC−4.
What is PST in UTC?
Pacific Standard Time is UTC−8; Pacific Daylight Time is UTC−7.
