Decimal Time Converter: Hours & Minutes to Decimal
To convert time to decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 7 h 45 min = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. Convert either way below, with an optional pay rate.
- Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60.
- 15 min = 0.25, 30 min = 0.5, 45 min = 0.75.
- 7.30 is not 7 h 30 min — that is 7.50.
- Back to minutes: decimal part × 60 (0.4 h = 24 min).
How to convert hours and minutes to decimal
- Keep the whole hours7 h 45 min → 7.
- Divide the minutes by 6045 ÷ 60 = 0.75.
- Add them7 + 0.75 = 7.75 hours.
- Seconds, if anyDivide seconds by 3,600 and add: 7:45:30 = 7 + 0.75 + 0.0083 = 7.7583.
Going the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 6.2 hours = 6 h + 0.2 × 60 = 6 h 12 min.

Why payroll uses decimal hours
Pay is rate × hours, and you cannot multiply a rate by “7 hours 45 minutes” directly. Converting to 7.75 hours makes it simple: 7.75 × $20 = $155. Every payroll and invoicing system works in decimals, and most timesheets export decimal hours.
Worked examples
Real-world scenarios, worked through step by step.
Daily timesheet
8:00 AM to 4:52 PM minus 30 minutes = 8 h 22 min = 8.37 hours.
Weekly pay
37 h 50 min = 37.83 hours × $18 = $680.94.
Invoice
A consultant logs 2 h 10 min, 45 min and 1 h 35 min: 2.17 + 0.75 + 1.58 = 4.50 hours.
Back to clock time
A report shows 5.85 hours: 0.85 × 60 = 51 minutes, so 5 h 51 min.
Rounding decimal hours
Two decimal places (hundredths of an hour, 36 seconds) are standard for payroll. Some employers record time in tenths (6 minutes) or quarters (15 minutes). Rounding punches is allowed under US federal rules only if it is neutral over time — the time card rounding calculator explains the rules and the 7-minute rule.
- Hundredths: 7:43 → 7.72 hours.
- Tenths: 7:43 → 7.7 hours (nearest 6 minutes).
- Quarters: 7:43 → 7.75 hours (nearest 15 minutes).
Decimal hours vs decimal time vs military time
Decimal hours (this page) express a duration — 7.75 hours worked. Military time expresses a time of day on the 24-hour clock — 1745 is 5:45 PM, and it cannot be multiplied by a rate. The military time converter handles clock times. “Decimal time” can also mean the old French system that divided the day into 10 hours, which is not used today.
Converting a whole timesheet
For a week of times, convert each day and add the decimals, or add the hours and minutes first and convert once. Both give the same result if you round only at the end. The weekly hours calculator accepts either format, and the time card calculator works directly from clock-in and clock-out times.

| Decimal | Minutes | Decimal | Minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.05 | 3 min | 0.55 | 33 min |
| 0.10 | 6 min | 0.60 | 36 min |
| 0.15 | 9 min | 0.65 | 39 min |
| 0.20 | 12 min | 0.70 | 42 min |
| 0.25 | 15 min | 0.75 | 45 min |
| 0.30 | 18 min | 0.80 | 48 min |
| 0.35 | 21 min | 0.85 | 51 min |
| 0.40 | 24 min | 0.90 | 54 min |
| 0.45 | 27 min | 0.95 | 57 min |
Worked example: a week of hours in decimal
Daily hours from a time card, converted to decimals and totaled. Round only the final total to avoid rounding errors creeping in.
| Day | Hours and minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| Mon | 8 h 22 min | 8.37 |
| Tue | 7 h 51 min | 7.85 |
| Wed | 8 h 05 min | 8.08 |
| Thu | 9 h 13 min | 9.22 |
| Fri | 6 h 40 min | 6.67 |
| Week | 40 h 11 min | 40.18 |
At $21 an hour, 40.18 hours pays $843.78. Writing Tuesday as “7.51” instead of 7.85 would have cost the employee 20 minutes of pay that day.
Billing in tenths and quarters of an hour
Professional services often bill in fixed increments rather than exact minutes. Law firms commonly use tenths of an hour (6 minutes), so a 4-minute email is 0.1 and a 22-minute call is 0.4. Agencies and consultants often use quarter hours. Whatever the increment, agree it in the engagement letter and apply it consistently — and keep the underlying exact time, because it is the evidence if a client queries an invoice.
The billable hours calculator turns decimal hours into utilization and revenue, and this guide for consultants covers billing increments in more depth.
How different industries use it
- consultancies: Invoices show decimal hours, so every entry is converted.
Do it in Excel or Google Sheets
If A2 contains a time such as 7:45 (formatted as time or duration):
- Time to decimal hours
=A2*24 - Decimal hours (B2) back to h:mm
=TEXT(B2/24,"[h]:mm") - Minutes (C2) to decimal hours
=C2/60 - Round to quarter hours
=MROUND(A2*24,0.25)
Spreadsheets store times as fractions of a day, which is why multiplying by 24 gives hours.
Who uses the Decimal Time converter — and why
- Payroll administrators entering hours into payroll.
- Employees checking a paycheck.
- Freelancers and consultants invoicing hourly work.
- Project managers comparing estimates and actuals.
- Accountants reconciling billable time.
- Anyone working with timesheets in Excel.
How we calculate
- Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60 + seconds ÷ 3,600.
- Reverse: minutes = decimal part × 60; seconds = remaining fraction × 60.
- Charts are rounded to two decimal places; the calculator shows four.
- All calculations run in your browser; nothing you type is sent to StaffTiming or stored.
